{"id":1338,"date":"2015-10-16T20:31:20","date_gmt":"2015-10-17T00:31:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/strathroycaradoclions.ca\/?page_id=1338"},"modified":"2016-08-19T20:44:09","modified_gmt":"2016-08-20T00:44:09","slug":"rcaf-23rd-operational-training-unit","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/rememberourvets.ca\/index.php\/rcaf-23rd-operational-training-unit\/","title":{"rendered":"RCAF 23rd Operational Training Unit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Number 23 Operational Training Unit<\/span><\/strong> was formed in April 1941 at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/QinetiQ_Pershore\">RAF Pershore<\/a> as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/No._6_Group_RCAF\">Number 6 Group<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RAF_Bomber_Command\">RAF Bomber Command<\/a> to train night bomber crews using the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vickers_Wellington\">Vickers Wellington<\/a>. \u00a0It carried out three operational sorties during 1942 and was disbanded in March 1944 with most of the aircraft moving to Number 22 Operational Training Unit.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>No. 6 Group RCAF<\/b><\/span>\u00a0oversaw the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Royal Canadian Air Force (pre-unification)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Canadian_Air_Force_(pre-unification)\">Royal Canadian Air Force<\/a>\u00a0(RCAF)\u00a0<a title=\"Heavy bomber\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heavy_bomber\">heavy bomber<\/a>squadrons in Europe during the\u00a0<a title=\"World War II\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">Second World War<\/a>, between 1942 and 1945. The\u00a0<a title=\"Group (military aviation unit)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Group_(military_aviation_unit)\">group<\/a>operated out of airfields in\u00a0<a title=\"Yorkshire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yorkshire\">Yorkshire<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"England\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/England\">England<\/a>. There was technically no\u00a0<b>6 Group RAF<\/b>during the Second World War, although a unit by that name had been previously active in the RAF, in: 1918; 1924\u201326, and 1936\u201339 (when it was a training unit).<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/No._6_Group_RAF#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/No._6_Group_RAF#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The group was made up of\u00a0<a title=\"Article XV squadrons\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Article_XV_squadrons\">Article XV squadrons<\/a>: RCAF units formed under the\u00a0<a title=\"British Commonwealth Air Training Plan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Commonwealth_Air_Training_Plan\">British Commonwealth Air Training Plan<\/a>, for service with British operational formations; hence No. 6 Group was part of\u00a0<a title=\"Royal Air Force\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Air_Force\">Royal Air Force<\/a>\u00a0(RAF)\u00a0<a title=\"RAF Bomber Command\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RAF_Bomber_Command\">Bomber Command<\/a>. However, a significant number of personnel from the RAF,\u00a0<a title=\"Royal Australian Air Force\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Australian_Air_Force\">Royal Australian Air Force<\/a>\u00a0(RAAF),\u00a0<a title=\"Royal New Zealand Air Force\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_New_Zealand_Air_Force\">Royal New Zealand Air Force<\/a>\u00a0(RNZAF) and other Allied air forces were attached to 6 Group during the war.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>RAF Bomber Command<\/b><\/span>\u00a0controlled the\u00a0<a title=\"Royal Air Force\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Air_Force\">RAF<\/a>&#8216;s bomber forces from 1936 to 1968. Along with the\u00a0<a title=\"United States Army Air Forces\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Army_Air_Forces\">United States Army Air Forces<\/a>, it played the central role in the\u00a0<a title=\"Strategic bombing during World War II\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strategic_bombing_during_World_War_II#Europe\">strategic bombing of Germany in World War II<\/a>. From 1942 onward, the British bombing campaign against Germany became\u00a0<a title=\"Area bombing directive\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Area_bombing_directive\">less restrictive<\/a>\u00a0and increasingly targeted industrial sites and the civilian manpower base essential for German war production. In total 364,514 operational sorties were flown, 1,030,500 tons of bombs were dropped and 8,325 aircraft lost in action. Bomber Command crews also suffered a high casualty rate: 55,573 were killed out of a total of 125,000 aircrew (a 44.4 percent death rate), a further 8,403 were wounded in action and 9,838 became prisoners of war.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The\u00a0Vickers Wellington<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0was a\u00a0<a title=\"United Kingdom\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom\">British<\/a>\u00a0twin-engined, long range\u00a0<a title=\"Medium bomber\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medium_bomber\">medium bomber<\/a>\u00a0designed in the mid-1930s at\u00a0<a title=\"Brooklands\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklands\">Brooklands<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Weybridge, Surrey\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weybridge,_Surrey\">Weybridge, Surrey<\/a>, by\u00a0<a title=\"Vickers-Armstrongs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vickers-Armstrongs\">Vickers-Armstrongs<\/a>&#8216; Chief Designer,\u00a0<a title=\"Rex Pierson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rex_Pierson\">Rex Pierson<\/a>\u00a0in response to specification B.9\/32. Issued in the middle of 1932, this called for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishpathe.com\/video\/wellington-bombers-1942\">twin-engined day bomber<\/a> of higher performance than any previous design. It was widely used as a night\u00a0<a title=\"Bomber\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bomber\">bomber<\/a>\u00a0in the early years of the\u00a0<a title=\"World War II\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">Second World War<\/a>, before being superseded as a bomber by the larger four-engined &#8220;heavies&#8221; such as the\u00a0<a title=\"Avro Lancaster\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avro_Lancaster\">Avro Lancaster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Wellington continued to serve throughout the war in other duties, particularly as an\u00a0<a title=\"Anti-submarine warfare\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anti-submarine_warfare\">anti-submarine aircraft<\/a>. It was the only British bomber to be produced for the duration of the war and was still first-line equipment when the war ended.
