{"id":2554,"date":"2016-07-18T00:24:26","date_gmt":"2016-07-18T04:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/strathroycaradoclions.ca\/?page_id=2554"},"modified":"2018-06-05T11:28:58","modified_gmt":"2018-06-05T15:28:58","slug":"12-february-21-december-18-1916-battle-verdun","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/rememberourvets.ca\/index.php\/12-february-21-december-18-1916-battle-verdun\/","title":{"rendered":"Battle of Verdun 1916"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Western Front<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, the combat in Western Europe soon turned into a stalemate of trench fighting along a front line stretching almost 1,000 kilometres across parts of Belgium and France. On one side of this \u201cWestern Front\u201d were the forces of France and Britain (along with allies such as Canada) and on the other were the Germans. From their opposing trenches they faced one another across a bleak \u201cNo Man\u2019s Land\u201d of barbed wire and shell craters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These strong defensive positions were well-protected by machine guns, snipers and artillery which made a decisive breakthrough of the enemy lines very difficult. Military leaders struggled with devising effective tactics to deal with the realities of this new kind of warfare. Nevertheless, plans were made to break the deadlock and the British and French marshalled their resources for the \u201cBig Push\u201d that would finally shatter the German defensive lines.
