The Strathroy – Caradoc Lions approved the concept in principle after conducting a ‘due diligence’ assessment of the project’s costs and responsibilties, and approached the Municipality to discuss how to implement the idea.<\/span><\/h5>\n
Andrew Meyer, the Municipality’s Director, Community & Cultural Services, was enthused about the concept as an oppportunity to focus on public service and community betterment; to cherish, preserve and showcase our history for the purposes of outreach, education and for the general betterment of the population. The C.A.O., Ralph Coe, was supportive and encouraged further investigation of the project’s feasibility.<\/span><\/h5>\n
Andrew suggested that other community partners be invited to participate to allow expansion the project’s scope to include renovation \/ replacement of the rubble stone wall at the cenotaph. The Arthur Currie Branch #116 of the Royal Canadian Legion and the IODE participated and discussion soon saw the grass area between the cenotaph walkway and the road sidewalk being replaced with a cement pad and a fountain contained in a walled sitting area were added. A cement wall was to replace the rubble stone wall, and the top surface was to be angled toward the street so that bronze memorial plaques, matching the battalions on the metal banners could be mounted.<\/span><\/h5>\n
The Strathroy – Caradoc Lions took on the costs (with individual and business sponsors) of the 47 metal banners to be hung on utility poles as well as the 46 plaques to be mounted on the cenotaph wall. The Legion and IODE were responsible for the cement wall and pad (with 5 local business sponsors). The fountain was funded by the Progress Through Partnership Committee. The Municipality provided staff for site preparation, accounts billing, installation of plaques, and in cooperation with Entegrus Powerlines Inc. was responsible for the installation of the banners on the utility poles. As ultimate owner of the banners, plaques and cenotaph property, the Municipality assumed all future liabilities.<\/span><\/h5>\n
Andrew Meyer, with the approval by Ralph Coe, presented a Council Report on August 22, 2016 outlining the background, consultation, financial implications and progress, comments and outcomes. An Agreement was reached to move ahead on the above understandings of intent and responsibilities.<\/span><\/h5>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
