These <strong>activity documents will stimulate questions and provide research leads toward finding possible answers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With modern access to <strong>tablets, satellite phones, etc. students can access information immediately<\/strong> even while standing beneath a pole banner along the Frank \/ Metcalfe West &#8216;Veterans Memorial Way&#8217;, or while in front of a cenotaph wall plaque and the cenotaph itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When the project is completed, visitors to the museum and cenotaph will have the opportunity to:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>+<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> identify the names of our veterans<\/span> from the engravings on the cenotaph monument<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">+ <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">match a veteran&#8217;s name to<\/span> the stainless steel plaque on the cenotaph wall, and be able to identify <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the battalion he was enlisted in<\/span> at the time of his death or leaving the armed forces<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">+ make \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">paper \/ pencil rubbings<\/span> (just like is done on grave stones) of the etchings on the plaques and so take image away with them (student groups like doing this)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">+ use support materials\u00a0provided by museum staff to encourage the use of technology to: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">access internet links to the museum site<\/span> to find background information about each veteran; use URL links to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">research the battalions<\/span>, match the date they died to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a particular conflict involving their battalion<\/span>, research <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the site where they died<\/span> (then and now), discover <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">monuments upon which their names are also engraved<\/span> in various spots in Europe, research aircraft \/ gunnery, etc. used in the period. \u00a0The possibilities are huge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">+ using background information about their lives, many veterans whose names are on the cenotaph grew up in and \/ or near to\u00a0Strathroy, to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">research their lives before going overseas<\/span> (for those that we know of): the sports teams they played on, the schools they attended, the address of the home they grew up in &amp; what does it look like today, the location of stores and businesses they worked in &amp; is that business still operating in some form, the location of the farm they grew up on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">+ Students and adults today will be able to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">more closely identify with the reality of the lives which these veterans sacrificed<\/span> in offering themselves to the defines of our Nation, to recognize how similar they were to us today in our activities, our wishes and aspirations, our willingness to give of ourselves to help others and assure their future security.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">+\u00a0Students and adults today may be encouraged to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">research the many factors causing dissent<\/span> between people and the causes of conflicts \/ wars that consume our wealth of goods and people as a Nation. \u00a0They may <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">research the settlements reached after wars<\/span> were over, and discover whether the terms of settlement resulted in peace between people or festered to lead to further conflicts. \u00a0They may have challenging discussions around <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">generating\u00a0alternatives we might have for reaching peaceful relations<\/span> among people, strategies of &#8220;how to get along together in the world sandbox, rather than reacting quickly in escalating emotional conflict.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">+ Students may <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">research the writings of famous strategists of warfare over history<\/span>, and famous battles fought in various places in the world over time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">+ Students and adults today will hopefully recognize that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Democracy is a very fragile thing<\/span>, that it is very easily threatened by people outside (and sometimes inside) our country, and that we need to be vigilant in protecting the hard won <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">rights and freedoms that our veterans fought and died for<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\"><strong>Lest we forget.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recessional_(poem)\">Rudyard Kipling (1897)<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(Click, on Kipling&#8217;s name, for background about Kipling&#8217;s poem \/ prayer.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">God of our fathers, known of old\u2014<br \/>\nLord of our\u00a0<a title=\"The Thin Red Line (Battle of Balaclava)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Thin_Red_Line_(Battle_of_Balaclava)\">far-flung battle line<\/a>\u2014<br \/>\nBeneath whose awful hand we hold<br \/>\nDominion over palm and pine\u2014<br \/>\nLord God of Hosts, be with us yet,<br \/>\nLest we forget\u2014lest we forget!<\/p>\n<p>The tumult and the shouting dies\u2014<br \/>\nThe Captains and the Kings depart\u2014<br \/>\nStill stands Thine ancient sacrifice,<br \/>\nAn humble and a contrite heart.<br \/>\nLord God of Hosts, be with us yet,<br \/>\nLest we forget\u2014lest we forget!<\/p>\n<p>Far-called our navies melt away\u2014<br \/>\nOn dune and headland sinks the fire\u2014<br \/>\nLo, all our pomp of yesterday<br \/>\nIs one with Nineveh and Tyre!<br \/>\nJudge of the Nations, spare us yet,<br \/>\nLest we forget\u2014lest we forget!<\/p>\n<p>If, drunk with sight of power, we loose<br \/>\nWild tongues that have not Thee in awe\u2014<br \/>\nSuch boastings as the Gentiles use,<br \/>\nOr lesser breeds without the Law\u2014<br \/>\nLord God of Hosts, be with us yet,<br \/>\nLest we forget\u2014lest we forget!<\/p>\n<p>For heathen heart that puts her trust<br \/>\nIn reeking tube and iron shard\u2014<br \/>\nAll valiant dust that builds on dust,<br \/>\nAnd guarding calls not Thee to guard.<br \/>\nFor frantic boast and foolish word,<br \/>\nThy Mercy on Thy People, Lord!<br \/>\nAmen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rememberourvets.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Poppy_Remembrance_Day_clip_art_medium.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-911\" src=\"https:\/\/rememberourvets.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Poppy_Remembrance_Day_clip_art_medium-300x282.png\" alt=\"Poppy_Remembrance_Day_clip_art_medium\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rememberourvets.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Poppy_Remembrance_Day_clip_art_medium.png 300w, https:\/\/rememberourvets.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Poppy_Remembrance_Day_clip_art_medium-59x55.png 59w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lest we forget.
