The war ended on September 2, 1945 when Japan formally surrendered. During WWII, 1.1 million Canadians served in\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadian_Army\">Army<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Canadian_Navy\">Navy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Canadian_Air_Force\">Air Force<\/a>. Canada also had a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadian_Merchant_Navy\">Canadian Merchant Navy<\/a>, provided training for pilots from allied countries, and also served in the armed forces of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allies_of_World_War_II\">allied countries<\/a>. Of the\u00a01.1 million who served, <strong>45,000<\/strong> lost their lives and <strong>54,000<\/strong> were wounded. In addition the the huge personal cost of killed and wounded, there was the financial cost between 1939 and 1950 (according to one source) of $21,786,077,519.13. \u00a0That is $21.786 <strong>Billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There are 17 veterans&#8217; names on the Strathroy Cenotaph for WWII. \u00a0At the time of their deaths or end of service, they were enlisted in 14 different military groups, referred to as\u00a0battalions, regiments squadrons, units or in one veteran&#8217;s case a ship.<\/p>\n<p>Below, in alphabetical order, is some background information about each\u00a0of those 17 veterans, and their military group.
