Commonwealth War Graves Commission
“The Commonwealth War Graves Commission ensures that 1.7 million people who died in the two world wars will never be forgotten. We care for cemeteries and memorials at 23,000 locations, in 154 countries. Our values and aims, laid out in 1917, are as relevant now as they were almost 100 years ago.”
“There are 2,837 CWGC locations in Canada where 18,440 Commonwealth War Dead are commemorated by name.”
There are two cemeteries in Strathroy in which some of the veterans named on the town cenotaph are interred.
Doing research into the past and considering a variety of sources sometimes creates questions of, “Which one is correct?”, “Why is this name included here and that one is not?” “Which date is correct?” Those questions make this “Veterans Memorial Way Project” an adventure. For examples:
1. The CWGC records 10 names for the Strathroy Cemetery and 1 name for the Strathroy All Saints Roman Catholic Cemetery. However, 4 of the names are not engraved on the Strathroy cenotaph nor are they recorded on the Strathroy Museum ‘Virtual War Memorial’ listing. These include Herbert E.P. Barnes, Frederick G. deGex, Robert O. Hillis, and John Leigh.
2. A walk around the Strathroy Cemetery has led to the discovery of 6 grave markers for veterans whose names are not on the CWGC list, the cenotaph, nor the ‘Virtual War Memorial’. Their grave markers indicate that each was killed during one of the world wars. Their grave markers read; Sergeant J. Reginald Buchanan, Killed in Action July 13, 1916, Buried in Cité Bon Jean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France; Private Richard M. Hall (#189971) “Killed in Action Nov. 3, 1916”; Sapper Laverne Marr, “Arras, France, 1899-1918; Pte. George Wm. Patterson, killed in action at Hill 70, August 15th, 1917; W/O – 2 Donald A. Thomson, Missing In Action, Dec. 28th, 1943, In His 24th Year; and Private George E. Wallace, 2nd Battn Can. Infantry, Killed In Action, April 26th, 1917, In His 22nd Year, Aubigny Communal Cemetery, Fr.
3. There is a grave marker for John Leigh (above), and for his son Pte. Lionel T. Leigh, 3rd Battalion B.E.F., France, 1897 – 1947, but Lionel’s name is not recognized otherwise.
4. Some of our veterans’ remains were interred in cemeteries around the world, or their remains were not found and their names have been recognized on memorials appropriate to the location where they were killed. Interestingly, local families have chosen to also recognize a veteran relative by placing a memorial monument in a Strathroy cemetery. Examples discovered so far are monuments for Oscar Davis (Pas de Calais, France), William Ferguson (St. Germaine, France), James N. McGeary (Vimy Memorial), and Charles Henry Smithrim (Vimy Memorial).
5. A walk around the Strathroy Cemetery has led to the discovery of a grave for a United States veteran who was married to a local woman. James B. Morrison, Michigan, PEC US Army, World War I, Oct. 21, 1895 – June 11, 1972. He is buried next to his wife, Vera C. Buttery, 1962 – 1970. They are buried in Section C, about 12 rows south of the interior access road. (N/ Lat. 42°56’49.48″ / W Long. 81°38’11.30″).
The Strathroy Municipal Cemetery has been “mapped” so as to locate the veterans’ gravesites that have identified so far. The cemetery has been separated into lettered sections, with each section labelled with the gravesites by row and distance from the start point. Click here to go to the Municipal Cemetery Mapping. There are photos (link below) of most of the gravestones that we have found so far, and the label includes its GPS coordinates and the letter.row.place for each. A walk around the Strathroy Cemetery has led to the discovery of 81 grave markers (@) for veterans whose names are not on the CWGC list, the cenotaph, nor the ‘Virtual War Memorial’. This may be because they died more than 2 years after the official end of a war.
7. The gravesites of 130+ veterans have been located in the Strathroy Community Cemetery, so far. Their inclusion here is because of a marking, label or symbol on the gravestone that indicates they’re a veteran: the military cross, a rank identifier (Private, Sergeant, etc.), a poppy, or a statement of where they died. Some names were found by researching the Legion, Ontario Command, Military Service Recognition Books. They are named below. Clicking on the bold high-lighted name will bring you to a new web page about each. [This is a work in progress.]
