Enlistment #3209040
Acting Sergeant
Joseph Payne’s connection to Strathroy is that he was born here. It appears his family moved to Alberta prior to his being drafted in Calgary Alberta on May 8, 1918 just 6 months before the war ended. He was a member of the 1st Depot Battalion, Alberta regiment. He went overseas on August 18, 1918, arriving in England on August 25, 1918. It is possible that Sergeant Payne is somewhere in this photo.
He did not see service in France. He returned to Canada and was finally discharged, in Alberta, on June 28, 1919.
There is no record of his death in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records, so he died after August 1921.
Some of A/Sgt Payne’s military records are available on the Strathroy Museum website.
