Norman was born on June 4, 1923, in Strathroy, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on July 28, 1941, and served with the Royal Canadian Army Corps during World War II. Private Smith was discharged on December 4, 1945, and enlisted again on September 9, 1954. Norman served with the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps from September 9, 1954, to November 30, 1973, when he was discharged at the rank of Warrant Officer. He saw active duty in England, France, Holland, Germany, and Egypt. HIs awards include the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Normandy also presented him with the Normandy Campaign Medal and the Liberators Medal. He was a Life Member of Sir Arthur Currie Legion Branch 116 and held numerous Chairman positions including President. Norman passed away on April 4, 2010, at the age of 86.
