Corporal

John Franklin Lovell, known by all his friends as “Jack,” was born on April 23rd, 1922 in Windsor, Ontario to Frank Edgar Lovell and Jean Gordon Houston Lovell. He had brown hair and hazel eyes. Jack was the middle child of three. He had an older sister, Mary Louise and a younger brother Robert.

Jack attended grade school near Windsor and later, Kennedy Collegiate in Windsor. He attended Beal Technical School in London for further education.

Jack’s father, Frank, was a farmer in Alvinston before moving to Windsor. While there, he worked as a bread delivery man for a local bakery.

In 1939, Frank enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps as a private. Jack joined the Essex Scottish Regiment. Later, Robert joined the Royal Canadian Service Corps and became a corporal.

In 1940, while the boys and their father were overseas, Mrs. Lovell moved to an apartment building on Frank Street in Strathroy, where the post office stands today.

While he was overseas, he wrote his mother many letters. Jack was not married.

He was killed in action on September 22, 1944 during heavy fighting in Belgium. Jack was 22 years old when he died. He is buried in the Schoonselhof Cemetery in Antwerp, Belgium.
